Interview with Connor De Phillippi

Connor De PhillippiConnor De Phillippi a driver from MAZDASPEED Drivers Development Program wins at Sebring. Over the weekend were the first two races of the 14 race series of Skip Barbers National Race Series. Not only did Connor win both races but was also the pole sitter for both days.

His two races on the 3.7 mile, 17-turn Sebring International Raceway couldn’t have been any more different. Race one getting a jump on the pack Connor lead wire to wire while the rest of the pack battled for the top five spots. By the end of the race he had a 2.312 second lead over second place with an average speed of 91.922 mph. Race two was a little different the three drivers behind Connor didn’t let him get the jump and the lead position changed hands 8 times between the top four drivers in the 10 lap race. Coming into the last lap Connor was in second as they went into turn one he passed for the lead and won by only 1.070 seconds with an average speed of 91.288 mph. Next month he will be going to Virginia International Raceway for races three and four of the series. Connor is looking forward to VIR; he really likes the track and placed second and third there last year. OBSCENE: How old are you?
CONNOR: I am 16 years old

 

OBSCENE: Where are you from?
CONNOR: I have lived in San Clemente, California for 12 years

 

OBSCENE: What kind of cars and races are you in?
CONNOR: I race an F2000 open wheel car in the Skip Barbers National Series. These cars are a smaller version of a Formula 1 car. In 2007 I won a scholarship from the MAZDASPEED Driver Development Program to race the Skip Barbers National Series. The Champion of the series receives a full ride in the Star Mazda Series for 2010.

 

OBSCENE: How long have you been racing?
CONNOR: I started racing go-karts when I was 5 years old. I worked my way through the ranks of karting. In karting, I currently hold the record for winning the most Super National Championship Titles. Winning 4 Championships in 3 years breaking Scott Speed and Michael Valientes records of 3 Super National Titles. When I won the scholarship in 2007 I started racing cars. In February I won the Silver State Championship at Las Vegas Motor Speedway racing a legend car on the road course.

 

OBSCENE: What was the last race you were in?
CONNOR: I raced in Sebring, Florida during the week of the historic race of the 12 hours of Sebring. The series I run travels with ALMS, Star Mazda and Rolex Sports Cars. I won pole both days and won both of my races.

 

OBSCENE: When you’re not racing what are you doing?
CONNOR: I like to hang with my friends and family. Other sports are tennis, wakeboarding, snowboarding, surfing and body boarding.

 

OBSCENE: Where do you see yourself in a year?
CONNOR: Next year I would love to be able to race in the Star Mazda Series. My season so far has started out with two wins and the Champion of the series I am racing will win a ride from Mazda in the Star Mazda Series next year.
